Internet and Beyond eMailValentines Day, February 14, is approaching. Be My Valentine now has reach way beyond the cards you can send or the voicemail you can leave when the object of your affections isn't there to respond. Introduced above are ways to make that connection, be it next door or around the world. First, some basic internet terms: INTERNET Basics: You would not be reading this if you weren't connected to the Internet. Here are some of the basics that may be taken for granted untli there are problems navigating: URL - Universal Resource Locator - a subset of the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) that specifies where an identified resource is available on the worldwide web - the address of a webpage. Website - a collection of related URLs or webpages that are linked together from a home or index page Domain name - the portion of the URL registered to it's owner (www.domainname.com) www - worldwide web .com, .net, org, .gov, .us, .de and more are suffixes added to complete the URL HTML - hypertext markup language - the basic code all URLs are written in. Of course there are fancier versions. HTTP - hypertext transfer protocol - starts each URL and is responsible for movement of URLs across Internet connections HTTPS - hypertext transfer protocol secure - encrypts or scrambles the movement so that the content of URLs can only be read when it reaches it's Internet destination. Watch for this in the URL you use to complete forms, send private information. SSL - secure socket layer - the way the "s" gets to appear in https. Statements about how your privacy is protected are meaningless unless you see the "s" in the URL. Be extremely careful of the locations where you share your information, images, and voice as in most cases this kind of information is recorded in some way. Terms - a requirement for URLs or websites to inform you of what you are about to become involved with. Other words may be used to designate this information. Privacy or Privacy Statement - a requirement for URLs or websites to inform you of what is to become of the information you share, how long it will remain accessible, how or even if you can remove it. navigate - movement from URL to URL when you enter the URL in the address window or search with keywords you enter in a search engine's window (like GOOGLE)
